The purpose of this unit is to briefly inform you on the opportunities and benefits of using video in teaching. You are also able to listen to different testimonials by teachers, who are experienced in using video in teaching and who are describing the perceived benefits of using video in their teaching.

We are also listing different aspects of why using video in teaching, both from the teacher’s and the student’s point of view.

The goal of the whole module is
  • To teach you to produce your own material (less problems with copyright infringements)
  • To lower the threshold for you to start producing videos for and together with your students
  • To enhance your understanding of the concept of producing and distributing videos
  • To increase your awareness of time frames and equipment needed for video production
  • To encourage co-producing, where your students are doing the recording in the classroom
  • To encourage you to use the technical expertise of your students, while the responsibility for the content and the pedagogical aim is still yours as teacher

Why using video in teaching

There are benefits both for the teacher and the students of using video in teaching. Some teachers are reporting that their students retain more information by videos, they understand concepts more rapidly and are more enthusiastic about learning. Videos can at the best inspire and increase the students motivation to learn and enhance their learning experience.

 Students study videos in advance and are better prepared for class

 Time spent in class is in better use for discussions and clarifications on difficult issues

 Students can repeat afterwards what they have learnt in class

 Teachers can share their own video material with other educational institutions and teachers

 Videos can be used as repetition in following courses

 More possibilities to address students with different learning patterns and capabilities

 Videos are also useful for students, who has not been able to attend class, because they can watch the material afterwards and can keep up with the learning
