Online assessment as inspiration for student-teacher dialogue

Why?

  • To assess students’ reflections and experiences after their 7-week teacher practice while simultaneously using their answers to further deepen the discussion about their learning process.
  • To assess students’ knowledge of concepts and give them formative feedback halfway through a course on special educational needs.

Who?

Students in a teacher education.

How?

I had previously only used Kahoot quizzes once or twice but never done a survey. Thanks to taking this Digimedia course, I decided to try using a survey, and it worked out perfect for this purpose. In addition to the Kahoot survey I also used the program Presemo for collecting responses from the students. These two online assessment tasks provided both the students and me useful information that we further used to reflect on their learning.

  • 12 questions with carefully selected questions and answer options.
  • Questions corresponding to the learning outcomes and content of the teacher practice.
  • Questions that also gave useful information to further develop the teacher practice.
  • Questions relating to the formal aspects of the teacher practice, but also more informal questions inspiring them to reflect on their learning process.
  • Enough time to respond (30 sec).
  • After every question I also engaged the students in a more playful dialogue (I tried to have a playful twist to some of the answer and in fact the students laughed when reading them) on some challenging issues that were raised during their teacher practice.
  • After every question we together discussed the answers on a group level à this gave the assessment further meaning.

Benefits

  • Students are familiar with Kahoot, and they had a playful competitive approach.
  • Having a survey for assessing their learning also provided me with a good opportunity to discuss Kahoot and similar online quizzes for assessment purposes in their future jobs as school teachers.
  • Using an online tool for assessment and feedback also provided opportunities to discuss the challenges Kahoot and similar digital tools can pose for students with special learning needs.
  • The Moodle-quiz in the middle was an eye-opener for both me and many of the students. Regarding their understanding of the course content.

Comment

Working with university pedagogy I am familiar with assessment criteria and frequently construct online rubrics and use the online assessment functions on Moodle. So, for this module I decided to challenge myself by doing different online quizzes I hadn’t tried before. And it definitely inspired me to use them more often in order to support student learning in a playful and “in between the lines kind of way”.

  1. Thanks for making us aware of the survey option in Kahoot! I have never designed any quizzes with this tool, but I agree that many students are very familiar with it. I should give it a go and include Kahoot more in my teaching.
