LEARNING OUTCOMES

DO ONE: ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCE
  • Apply the ADDIE Model in designing simulations
  • Reflect on how to make a simulation playful
  • Plan your way to designing and developing a playful simulation
  • Prepare for each ADDIE phase
  • Design and get prepared to create a simulation, based on the ADDIE model
  • Reflections - Learning journal entry
  • Prepare and design playful simulations

TIPS TO REMEMBER

  • The ADDIE model is not linear! It is cyclical! So, phases depend on one another!
  • The Evaluation phase is repeated at each stage! So do not forget to: Evaluate your Design based on your Analysis (Evaluation of Needs), Evaluate your prototype with real people (Test your prototype), Revise your prototype based on feedback, Evaluate your almost final product with real people (Test your simulation), Implement and if necessary Evaluate again!
  • Choose material that is free of copyright issue and it is easy to embed in your simulation.
  • Organize your material in folders on your computer. Make a separate folder for each one of the following:  images, videos, animations, sounds. It saves time if you store each item with a file name corresponding to the pages/phase of your simulation. Do this after you have your storyboard and flowchart.
  • If you will use text make a text document with the text organized in headings of the page and phase of your simulation each piece of text will be used.
  • This is a Playful Simulation! Do not forget to make it playful and Play with it!

TEMPLATE FOR PLANNING YOUR DO ONE: ASSIGNMENT AND TEACH ONE BLOG POST

Here you find a template for planning your PLD activity, a.k.a. your DO ONE: ASSIGNMENT. The template consists of notes for documenting the PLD activity as well as for notes for the TEACH ONE blog post.

The PLD activity consists of four elements
  1. Create a lesson plan and plan how to implement simulations in your teaching
  2. Produce own simulation; reuse existing simulations; or let your students produce their simulations
  3. Try out the ADDIE model by using simulations in your teaching
  4. Evaluate your experiences of the activities and plan to write a blog post in TEACH ONE unit.

The template can be downloaded and filled in (pdf).

Let's reflect on...

While preparing, remember that you need to reflect and evaluate your work at every step! So reflect on:

  • What are the steps/phases you will follow?
  • Which are the main evaluation criteria for a successful playful simulation?
  • What tools are there available and easy to use to develop your simulation?
  • How will you prepare to implement the ADDIE model?
  • How will you move from one phase to the next and how will you evaluate the work in each phase?

YOUR TURN TO CREATE!

In this final stage you will create your playful simulation!

WHAT WILL YOU NEED?

  • Authoring Tools: open the authoring tool you have already selected
  • Load the tool
  • Have the tutorial in hand
  • Use the selected authoring tool and employ its features for creating a playful simulation
  • Your preparation and scripting notes & staff
  • Watch again the video on the analysis, design and development ADDIE phases
  • Have in hand the materials you collected and created during the previous stage
  • Use the selected authoring tool and employ its features for creating a playful simulation.
  • Employ additional technical and pedagogical characteristics that make a simulation playful.

FINAL STEPS

Develop your simulation (phase 2):

- develop your simulation with the authoring tool you have chosen,

- evaluate your product with the help of a colleague and the rubrics tried out earlier.

Implement your simulation:

- try your simulation with a sample of students,

- get feedback and make improvements.

Evaluate your simulation (or an existing simulation from an online repository)
