Kahoot as an eAssessment

Through the opportunities of online learning I choose the Kahoot concept.

Who? Software Development and Entrepreneurship students

What? Numerical systems http://bit.ly/2Hs6OSX

In the process of creating a test, appeared thoughts:

  • Test assignments must be worded clearly, concisely and unequivocally so that all students can understand the meaning of what is required of them.
  • Variants of answers to each task should be selected in such a way as to exclude the possibility of simple guessing or discarding a knowingly inappropriate answer.
  • Response options should also be formulated briefly and unambiguously.
  • As the wrong answers, it is desirable to use the most typical mistakes of students.

Convenience.

  • Kahoot is a very simple and free platform that allows you to answer questions of various types.
  • Setup does not take much time.
  • The teacher immediately sees the answers to the questions, which allows us to understand how well the students have learned the material.
  • After each question there is an opportunity to comment on the answers and together to figure out what exactly caused the difficulties with the answer.
  • You can create your own tests, and you can choose from the library one of the available tests (eg. Math by Kahoot!)
  • Kahoot has a number of interesting features that help motivate and captivate students.
    • when a question appears on the screen, the music starts to play and for each question it is different,
    • a ticking sound is heard, reminding that the time for response is limited (can be choosen 30s, 60s, 90s or 120s for answering).
    • students can choose Quiz access (computer nad mobilephone).
    • the faster students answer Questions get more points.
    • there is an opportunity to respond to one student or group of students.
    • there is a leaderboard showing who scored the most points.
  • When the test is complete, you can download the class results as an Excel spreadsheet and the time they took for each question. This is a quick and easy way to read it. This guideline is automatically generated.

Problems.

  • Two students had problems with the test, because the mobile phone screen should be active all the time.
  • The test took longer than planned.

Conclusion.
Kahoot is a great assessment tool. It allows the teacher to quickly receive an instant feedback in the framework of the lesson: to identify difficulties, the level of mastering the material by one student and the class as a whole.

  1. Hello! Thank you for your blog post! I have recently started using Kahoot more frequently and you gave me some useful tips I wasn’t aware of. It’s fun to see how much even university students like playing Kahoot. And they seem to enjoy the Kahoot-music, they say it makes the quiz-experience more playful.

  2. This is a great example of the gamification of education. I enjoyed the Kahoot questions and the experiences you shared in the post. I have played in language classes, and it was a good way of memorizing expressions.

  3. Kahoot is a really convenient assessment tool especially if you want to get feedback right away and from a large group. “Team mode” is also good think to try.

  4. Kahoot is also one of my favourite interactive assessment tools. I usually struggle with same technical issues as you: the mobile phone screen should be active all the time in order to work fluently. Depending on how fast 4g or wifi is inthe classroom I encourage my students to shut down their “competition mode” if their mobiles are having a slow day. It’s amazing that Kahoot is still going strong after many years while many other tools are forgotten or had a very short appearance.
